Here is an interesting quote I recently read and I think that it applies to all the questions and comments surrounding art and faith. I still haven't been able to figure out exactly what my pastor meant with the whole "bad art is bad Christianity" thing, but this quote is right on the money in my opinion:
"The church has put a spiritual hierarchy on jobs," said Stockman. "Ministers and missionaries are on top, then perhaps doctors and nurses come next and so on to the bottom, where artists appear. Artists of whatever kind have to compromise everything to entertain. Art is fluffy froth that is no good in the Kingdom of God. What nonsense."
I hope that this at least makes us think about the role of art in the Christian faith, how it is negelected and undervalued in the Church, and what we can continue to do to change people's attitudes about it.
