Randy Hein's Lewis/Tolkien seminar--Part III
Week three was my favourite installment of His Royal Hein-ness' seminar thus far. Much of this probably has to do with the fact that I know far less about the life and work of Tolkien, though I have read both 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings', than I do that of C.S. Lewis. Randy shed light on aspects of LOTR of which I was previously unaware. His examination of the difference between an adventure ('The Hobbit') and an epic ('Lord of the Rings') was very interesting because I had never even thought about them in that way before. Randy also briefly touched on some of the theological aspects of LOTR, especially the role of faith, hope, and love in seeing us through when the darkness of this world seems overwhelming and poised to crush us. I am looking forward to the final seminar next week where he says he will dig deeper into the theology of Tolkien's epic story which, by the way, has been voted the greatest book of the 2oth century. Randy's grasp of the subject matter, his obvious love for it, and his passion in wanting to get it across to his audience has made this a fun, relaxing, and informative seminar series. Until next week...
