Record Review: Wide Mouth Mason--Shot Down Satellites
Dropped by their record label (Warners), underrated, and seemingly misunderstood, I have a real passion for this this three-piece out of Saskatoon. They are talented, passionate, and one of the best live acts you will ever see. Thankfully the indie label Curve picked them up and the result is one of their finest albums yet: Shot Down Satellites. Alternately hard driving and funky, the album starts out with a bang on "I Love Not Loving You" and picks up speed through "Unfolding" before taking off with "Everybody's Right" and "Really Wrong" (my 2 fave cuts on the album). The title track, "Phantom Limb", "Rust" and the hilarious kiss-off "Please Go Home" are other highlights on what is a solid, fun, funky, and hard-rockin' record. I am really looking forward to seeing these songs live when/if WMM hits Victoria. My advice: see these guys live because it is where they truly excel. You will seldom see a more energetic, fun, virtuousic, and worthwhile show. Lotsa bang for your buck and often great covers ("Superstition", "Billie Jean", and "Crosstown Traffic" by Hendrix just to name a few I've heard them play). And pick up the album!
