I realize that many of you have probably been grumpily asking "When is Matt going to post on the Bing Dynasty again?" And so I thought that I should give you an update as to what is happening with me and, as usual, some pondering on both the Leafs and music.
I am back at school for the start of my second of three semesters of my graduate program. So far, so good. I ended last semester 2% away from straight A's, far exceeding my expectations for myself. This semester I scored a job in my faculty's special library, I have Mondays off, and my classes appear to be FAR more interesting than the required courses that I had to take in my first semester.
I am sickened by the fact that the Los Angeles Galaxy Football Club is going to pay David Beckham $250 million over five years to play for their team. The math works out to close to $1 million a week! There are people in the world who are starving, who have nothing, yet some rich idiot owner is going to pay one guy $1 million PER WEEK to play soccer. What the hell is wrong with this world?? I could rant on forever about this, but I will rest there because it won't do any good anyway.
The Leafs. What can I say about the Leafs? It was pretty funny to watch the Canucks make an embarrassment of my team (hey, if anyone had to do it I would most want it to be the Canuckers because I love them too) and the game on Saturday, showcased on CBC's "Hockey Day in Canada", aptly displayed the big difference between the two teams: goaltending. Luongo was outstanding, Raycroft was cringeworthy. Despite convincingly outshooting the Canucks, Toronto only managed to put ONE shot by Luongo and even that was pretty much a garbage goal. Raycroft, on the other hand, made it shockingly easy for Vancouver to score. The Salo goal that beat him glove side made him look like a little leaguer as he managed to stab at the puck ridiculously, just barely getting a piece of it as it flew by him. I was laughing hysterically in disbelief and amusement at how bad the team looked. Time for the injured players to get back and help out! Time to re-examine the goaltending...
Music-wise, I have been on a Dylan kick, as well as listening frequently to Gord Downie's 'Coke Machine Glow'. The past couple days have seen repeated spins of Jeff Buckley's 'Sketches (For My Sweetheart the Drunk)' and Ryan Adams' 'Cold Roses'. I don't have any money to buy new music so I find myself revisiting old friends such as Wilco's 'Summerteeth' and Daniel Lanois' 'Shine'. Caitlin and I have both been loving the Band lately so 'Music From Big Pink' and 'The Band' have spent their share of time in the CD tray also.
Well, I am off to play some cards with my wife and perhaps do some more reading before the night is out. Cheers y'all!!

I don't have as much of a problem with the owner paying Mr. Beckham such a sum. It brings people to the games, which in turn generates revenue.
However, Mr & MRS Beckhams 'posh' lifestyle is more of a concern to me in light of worldwide suffering. Don't get me wrong. I don't have any problems with acquiring wealth and enjoying the fruits of your labors. It is the mass marketing of self-indulgent luxury that disturbs me.
