a national symbol
I was out walking with a school colleague of mine and we started to discuss our mutual hatred of one of Canada's national symbols: the Canada Goose. I DESPISE these birds if only for the fact that they are dirty, stinky, "giant rats with wings" (courtesy of Michael McAlpine, all rights reserved) who pick one place and proceed to deface it through serial defecation and non-stop feeding. They are revolting fowl that make me thankful that the beaver is our actual national animal (small, clean, industrious, unobtrusive--all good qualities). We should be shooting these avian marauders because of how pestilent and unsanitary they are, but unfortunately it is a criminal offence--just ask the farmer in Victoria who was caught and charged for killing them because of their damage to his crops! As far as I am concerned, we should have given the guy the Order of Canada for Exemplary Service to the Country. He had the right idea! But, until we are able to lobby the government to allow citizens to routinely destroy these "scourges of our home and native land", it looks like they are here to stay! Bummer!

I happen to have a deep affinity for the canada goose. To me they represent freedom. Their v-shaped flight has brought joy to countless souls. Their returning honk is a much welcomed sound after a long winter. I've spent many moments at the beach pondering their curious ways. Maybe beauty really is in the eye of the beholder after all.
I couldn't agree more my friend! The goose has been and remains one of my least favorite members of the animal kingdom. It likely started when one bit me as a child at the petting zoo, and continues through to today when they crap all over the field at camp imadene and especially all over the waterfront! Oh Bingman, how you cut to the core of me; your so wise, like a slightly hair covered budda...

... and yet we allow the Natives of this land to go out and kill baby seals, and the government stands behind them saying it's okay! Where is the justice? Maybe the line should be "our home and native/canadian gooses land". Wow, I really sound bitter here!

Hilarious.
I agree with Paige that they are a wonder to me. Something about the Trumpeter Swan... which to me was a Canada Goose so I could relate.
However, I do agree that their crap can get annoying, especially while playing football or soccer on a recently soiled field. Slippy.
However, I do believe they allow culls on the rare case.
More importantly, the beaver is not unobtrusive... it hucks down our trees at an enormous rate! These should be taken out... after all they really are extremely large rats.
this is one of your best rants yet. WELL written, poetic in parts, and so completely true. Although I could never actually kill a goose myself, I would shake the hand of someone who did, and even pat them on the back.
