"The Bread of Life never gets stale..."???

I saw this slogan on a church sign downtown and laughed out loud because it sounded so absurdly cheesy and ridiculous. I'm sorry, but is this supposed to be clever? Is it supposed to draw people who are curious about faith into the church? I think it is sad that often Christians are thought to be cheesy and irrelevant but, with slogans like this and our often horrible "Christian" (the adjective) art and music, am I surprised? I realize that I am very sensitive to these sorts of things and very reactionary, but I grew up in the church yet have friends who did not and so I want faith to look plausible and appealing, not goofy and stupid. I guess it is something that I will spend the remainder of my life railing against, most likely with little success, but I will rage on...

i hear ya man. some of those signs are just plain ridiculous. that said, the best sign i've seen in town read: "under same management for over 2000 years"

and that, my friend, was funny.

Matty,
I love ya, and I know this stuff is important to you, but you really don't need to convince others that faith isn't stupid. Most people have some semblance of spirituality, even if they don't agree with the institution of organised religion--give 'em some credit. Silly slogans on church signs are not worth stressing over, my friend. Besides, sometimes they can be pretty decent. The Unitarian church down the street from me recently had a sign with the slogan: "Minds are like parachutes. They only function when open." Cheesy? Yes. Irrelevant? I think not.

I actually find that often, those slogans are not only cheesy, but they're theologically shaky at best. The Bread of Life never gets stale? There were probably an awful lot of people with a stale, bitter, and horrible taste in their mouths the day the Bread of Life was nailed to a tree.
