the culture of work

I am going to ramble incoherently about a subject dear to my heart and constantly on my mind: that of the way in which we work everyday, by which I mean our jobs. My belief is that, as a society, we work far too many hours and at an unhealthily accelerated rate. The long hours we keep contribute to stress, depression, family breakdown, and other forms of illness. We are so worried about financial success and being "fulfilled" that in the process we miss out on other things like rest, contemplation, time with loved ones, and fun. My job takes up so much of my time that I don't sleep well because I am constantly thinking about work, worrying about work, and flat out doing work. Do not get me wrong, I am thankful to have a job that pays me decently when there are so many people who are not so blessed. It's just that I have suffered from depression that is almost completely work-related and would love to see the rate at which we work decreased. I feel that our society is suffering because of job-related stress. Biblically, it is clear that God wants us to work and that it is good for us, but there needs to be a limit. Our jobs become idols to which we commit most of our time and energy and that is no way to live our lives. Do I see it changing anytime soon? No. Will I continue to put in long hours and stress about my job? Probably. I do not have any idea how to change this, but identifying it as a problem is the first step in moving toward a solution or at least a compromise. Perhaps my seven readers will disagree with me and that's all right as well, but I figured it was at least an issue worth raising.

I agree wholeheartedly. I can't say that I've had a lot of experience with this myself, but I see it happening in epidemic proportions in society. Right now I'm able to get away with doing remarkably little in the way of work, but I know that it's probably going to catch up to me soon and aside from that I feel pretty guilty about it. Balance is rarely an easy thing to achieve.
